Members of the Brownsville community say they feel shaken up after the police fired multiple shots inside the Sutter Avenue Station on Sunday.

"So sad to hear that happened so close to where I live," said Lorraine, who takes the L train daily.

On Sunday at 3 p.m., a confrontation between two officers and a fare evader turned dangerous.

The man, who officials have identified as 37-year-old Derell Mickles, attempted to ditch the fare for the L train.

In a press conference on Sunday, NYPD officials say the officers followed Mickels and demanded payment. The interaction then took a turn for the worst.

"He muttered the words, 'I'm gonna kill you if you don't stop following me,'" said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.

They say Mickles then pulled out a knife and went after the officers. According to police, they attempted to tase him, but the device failed.

The officers then fired multiple shots, hitting Mickles and two civilians. Mickles remains in critical condition.

News 12 spoke with his aunt, Tiffany, who had no idea her youngest nephew had been shot. News 12 broke the news to her.

"I'm just a little lost and confused... I can't imagine what my sister is going through right now," said Tiffany through tears.

An innocent bystander, a 49-year-old man, was shot in the head. He is also in critical condition.

A female bystander was grazed with a bullet, and one of the officers was hit as well. They are both expected to make a full recovery.
