The family of a 41-year-old man who was fatally shot on a BX36 bus in Parkchester is speaking out as police continue searching for the suspect.
"They told me my brother was deceased, and I didn't believe it," Avery Pettigrew said.
Avery's brother, Jonathan Pettigrew, was shot in the stomach
Monday afternoon after an argument with another passenger on the bus.
Avery described his brother as a devoted father of seven who lived in Soundview with his youngest daughter, who is 7 years old.
"He's a good kid. He's not a street person. He's very funny. He's very into sports," Avery said.
According to Avery, Jonathan was heading to pick up his daughter from school after work when he got into an argument with another passenger who was talking loudly on the phone. Police say the suspect then shot him before running away.
Police sources tell News 12 that investigators are looking for a 15-year-old boy they believe was responsible for the shooting and plan to arrest him as soon as possible.
New surveillance video obtained by News 12 shows the aftermath of the shooting. The video shows Jonathan getting off the bus and limping before collapsing on the sidewalk.
Additional surveillance video shows passengers running from the bus moments after the shooting. The video shows someone sprinting away down White Plains Road and a family pushing a stroller away from the bus.
"I just want justice and hope he pays for what he has done," Avery said when asked what his message to the shooter was.
