A Brooklyn family is demanding justice after they say police abused their power by interrupting a private memorial service held at a Bed-Stuy event space.
“We were having food, listening to music dancing, you know, celebrating the life that once was here," said Alana Moye, a family member.
Moye and other guests told News 12 police busted into Three 24 The Venue on Aug. 23 while she and her family were remembering their late cousin.
“I see them just pulling the wires from the DJ equipment and breaking his stuff, I went and asked what happened, and the moment I asked what happened the male officer reared back and pushed me," said Ebony Kirby, another family member.
Video taken that night appears to show an officer pushing Kirby while telling her to back up. Later in the video, another officer appears shove her up against the wall and handcuff her. Kirby says she was kicked and punched throughout the rest of the night.
“I thought I was being targeted. Someone actually sent them to beat me up the way I got beat up," Kirby said.
According to police, five people, including Ebony, were taken into custody. They say multiple people refused to listen to vacate orders, and that officers feared for their safety after two people displayed closed fists towards them.
Those five people were charged with multiple offenses, including resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Ebony and her family, however, say the event was peaceful until police arrived.
“They are the ones that made it disorderly. We asked them nicely multiple times what was the problem," Kirby said.
