Local elections. We're tracking all the latest details and hearing from experts this morning. Yeah. And joining us right now here on news 12 to discuss it all is Hafsa Law Professor James Sample. Good morning James. Good morning. I mean, all this breaking news unfolding right now, lots of eyes glued to the TV, screen last night. Just what's your reaction? Well, it's certainly a historic night and then it is certainly uh a a day in which America wakes up to a very, very unique circumstance. I mean historic, uh any presidential election is historic, this presidential election only the second time in American history where a president will serve uh two non consecutive terms in office, obviously being elected in 2016, uh then running again and losing in a close race in 2020 now uh uh effectively being declared the winner and, and will be taking office in January of 2025. Um The first time in American history that a convicted Ellen has uh taken the, the oval office. Uh certainly a unique circumstance in that regard as well. Certainly, uh some interesting questions out there with respect to uh the cases that had been brought against him. Um, those will probably be largely going away the New York case. Uh, however, you know, he's due to be sentenced. I suspect that will be put on hold. Um, and for on Long Island, certainly some compelling congressional races that could have a major impact on the State of the House of Representatives. Of course, and we are waiting on some of those races, of course, the Senate has taken more control on the Republican side. We're waiting for the House and those, those races to be called. But here on Long Island, the Di esposito Gillen race could make a whole lot of a difference. Right, James. Absolutely. And I think, you know, if you look at, you go, you rewind the clock just, uh, you know, a month or two months ago. Uh, I don't think that that was perceived, I mean, certainly they've had a close race previously, but certainly, you know, two months ago, I don't think that that would have been one that you would have seen flipping and we don't know for sure whether it will. There's still some vote to be counted there. Um, and it hasn't been officially called at least, uh, my understanding. But, um, you know, that is a race where I think Congressman di esposito, um, who has had some problems in the past or some, you know, some disciplinary issues on the police force and some allegations. Uh, you know, some settlements that the city had to pay on his behalf. Uh, things of that nature. But, uh, this, the, the allegations with regard to essentially using taxpayer dollars to pay, uh, both allegedly his, uh, fiance and, uh, a different woman who was allegedly, uh, his mistress at taxpayer expense. Um, you know, I suspect that whatever the number of voters who switched their vote because of that or who didn't support him because of that is that may end up proving to be, uh, consequential and the difference in that race so much. I don't mean to cut you off, but we do have to take a break. We're going to talk about all of this coming.

And this morning we're tracking, of course the latest hearing from experts on the race for the White House and our local elections here on Long Island. So joining us right now live this morning to break it all down for us is the Executive Dean of Suburban Studies at Hofstra University. Good morning, Larry Levy. Good, early morning. How are you? Good morning. Yes. So breaking news this morning, the A P declaring President Trump as president elect your reaction on all this. Well, he did everything he said he was going to do. Uh I know a lot of Democrats are hoping he doesn't do everything he said he was gonna do, but in terms of running the race, um he went after uh males, he went after uh Latinos, he went after black voters. He tried to bring in just enough uh people from the democratic base, the Democratic coalition that elected Biden to put him over the top. And that's basically what happened. Larry, let's go local for just a second because it matters so much. The Republicans reclaimed control of the Senate. Of course, the house races, those are yet to be determined. One of our house races. Gillan di esposito. That could mean a whole lot to the national stage. Yeah, in theory, uh, the House is still not settled yet. I was looking at some of the results in the California competitive districts and they're not going very well for the Democrats. So the odds are that, uh, the House will be in Republican hands and one seat won't make a difference. But it was kind of an odd outcome. The sign at the Republican headquarters said that Suffolk was, uh, uh, a Trump country. Well, Long Island was pretty much Trump country. He not only won Suffolk by, uh, an enormous margin but he actually won NASA by 25,000 votes after losing it by more than that four years ago. And conventional thinking is that when the top of the ticket does, well, the down ballot races like, and Anthony de esposito would do well, but Laura Gillis managed to use her $30 million wisely. And, uh, uh, and Judy Griffin in the assembly race was not favored to win. Uh, and she also eked it out. So it was kind of an odd night of results on Long Island. Yeah. Presidential race to our local elections that are going to have huge impacts. We're breaking down the results as soon as they come in. So right now joining us live from our newsroom is Associate Provost at Farmingdale State College Chris Malone Chris. Good morning, good morning. Starting with the presidential race. Is it surprising to you at all that Trump has won the swing, all swing states so far? Look, it's a stunning victory. Uh It looks like he's gonna win just about every battleground state. He will be the uh only the second president to win non consecutive presidential terms. Grover Cleveland in the 18 eighties. Uh It's probably the the biggest political comeback in us history. Uh He was left for political dead on January 7th 2021. It is a stunning victory and a stunning comeback. I don't think there's any way to put it other than that. Now we know Long Island voted red for the president, but not so much in Nassau County for our local elections. Still the only race congressional race yet to be called in the state this morning is that fourth district with de Esposito and Glan Gillan already said that she is the winner. How could that play out on a national stage now? Yeah, it looks like, look, this was a change election through and through the White House has changed, the Senate has changed and probably the House of Representatives will change from Republican control to democrat control so that fourth congressional district could be key in. Uh Hakeem Jeffries from Brooklyn becoming the speaker of the house. So if it holds blue, uh it is likely that the House of Representatives will become under the control of the Democrats and we will have a full complete change of power in Washington DC in both branches of government. Now all morning long we're also hearing from experts and breaking down the latest results on these elections. Security is also on the top of minds of everyone as it was no matter what the results may be. And right now joining us live from our newsroom is former state Homeland Security adviser, Mike Balboni. Good morning, Mike. Good morning. You know, some scares across pulling sites across the country. But luckily no major scares right here on Long Island. No, actually everything seems to be the way an election day should be. There were no reports of any incidents at any of polling places and frankly, you haven't heard anything around the country either. It was a big concern as a result of the election that people would want to protest and maybe those protests could get out of hand. Um That obviously is something that you'll see in the light of day today after the, the uh results are announced. But the scenario that many people talked about was that they would, the presidential election would be so close that you would have a recount or that you'd have something that would drag on for a while and during that time, you might have a, a, another, uh, issue like in 2000 when you had the parties get together in the different States like Florida and really, really go at it. Yeah, I think shocking a whole lot of people that this is so divisive this morning we have the results, um, they have been made but now moving forward depending on how you voted. Uh, are there concerns about moving forward after, in the days after the uh election day? Well, we're gonna wait and see what uh the social media brings out here. I think people are just digesting what's going on and whether or not uh this is going to be something that is gonna be a focal point at this point in time. Um The initial concern, obviously, if you, if you read a lot of the press was that it was gonna be from the right. And obviously after the, the January 6th issue, uh four years ago, there's a concern about that, a faction of that. Well, obviously with Trump winning and that, you know, that faction is not gonna get engaged in that way. Um We're gonna see but, you know, this is the time that the country needs to step back and just say, OK, let's all try to get past that divide if we can, let's calm our anxieties and look to a world. Unfortunately, it's gotten a lot more dangerous and let's try to understand that as Americans, we need to come together so that we have a more secure country. See at Hofstra University, we want to welcome Doctor Mina Bose to get reaction on the events of last night and what we're still waiting to learn today here on Long Island, we'll start on the national level. Sure. Well, thank you for having me. It's been a, um, it's been kind of a whirlwind 24 hours. Uh What's I think uh we have some surprises although all of the battleground states in the presidential race were within the margin of error. All of the polls had predicted that. Um and so there was a possibility that either they would go all, go for Harris, all, go for Trump or be split. Um I think the kind of conventional wisdom expectations were either that they would be split and we would have a few days to see if uh the election came down to a couple of swing states, particularly Pennsylvania or that they might break for Harris. Um I think the, the fact that uh now president elect Trump um has won five of those di grounds definitively and appears on track to win Michigan and Arizona, which would be a sweep, um was a surprise and I think that that is um where we're kind of unpacking. Now, what explains the solid, right, the kind of solid support the victory in the popular vote. That again, it appears certain that um Donald Trump has won and a solid victory in the electoral college. We'll bring you back to Long Island right now. Doctor B, as we're waiting, of course, on uh confirmation for that fourth district, we see it is tending to lean one direction. What is that going to mean in the broader scale when it comes to the house? Well, you know, the house is the question we're still waiting. The Senate will be Republican majority Republican. Uh There's still a few outstanding races but the Republicans have, I think right now it's uh 51 seats for sure. Um And possibly a couple more that is important for the president's uh judicial confirmations for executive appointments for the house. Um the fourth district among others, uh several districts in California and a few others across the country. Um This will determine uh party control of the house is influential. The passage of legislation, all revenue raising bills have to begin in the house. Um You know, the House has uh uh has uh works with the Senate on passing major bills on um uh making uh agreements and um and working with the uh with the White House. So party control is consequential. If the Republicans retain control of the House, then that brings an opportunity for the party to overcome intraparty differences and have a unified agenda. We'll wait and see if that is the case. Of course, it goes back to our motto here at News 12 that these local elections are what lead to national change. Of course. Thank you for the time today.
