Police say one of Orange County’s most scenic roads has become an unwelcome hotspot for street racing, burnouts and reckless driving.
New body camera video obtained by News 12 shows a long line of cars pulled over earlier this month during a multi-agency crackdown along the Hawk’s Nest section of Route 97 in Deerpark.
Police say they launched the operation after getting complaints about late-night gatherings involving speeding, screeching tires, burnouts and traffic being blocked after midnight.
According to Deerpark police, officers from several agencies stopped around 30 cars and issued about 50 traffic tickets during the May 2 enforcement operation.
The crackdown involved Deerpark police, New York State Police, Orange County sheriff’s deputies and Port Jervis police.
Police say the drivers involved came from several parts of New York and Pennsylvania.
AAA spokesperson Robert Sinclair says the problem is becoming more common.
“These things are increasing in number, and it just goes to show the wanton disregard for the rules of the road. And it puts everyone in danger,” Sinclair told News 12.
Police say the investigation remains active and more enforcement operations are planned.
Authorities say they are also looking into possible criminal charges against event organizers, along with possible additional misdemeanor charges for some drivers involved.
