The opening of the new Wegmans supermarket in Norwalk is four months away, and News 12 Connecticut got a sneak peek.
Construction is still underway. Wegmans gave News 12 an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the progress of its 92,000-square-foot store in Norwalk set to open in July.
"This is our first store in Connecticut, and we have a lot to offer. A great shopping experience and a great place for our people to work and give back to the communities," said Emily Gee, Wegmans store manager.
The planning has been months in the making. The new store will feature all the traditional departments Wegmans customers have come to know and love, including delicious restaurant foods, an abundant produce department with hundreds of different fruits and vegetables, and cheese options. This family owned and operated store will also be giving back.
"We're working with Connecticut Foodshare and some other local organizations as well to have them pick up any sort of nonsellablefood that we can continue to give back that way," said Cody Nunn, Wegmans service manager.
Wegman's will employ approximately 500 people, most hired locally. But they are still looking to hire a couple hundred people.
"Customer service, entry level management and then also full- and part-time positions," said Gee.
Norwalk will be one of the few Wegmans with an upstairs cafe.
"There will cafe seating along the entire railing here, and then we have our larger cafe seating toward the end. And what's really awesome is you really do get a great view of the entire store from up just to see all of our departments," said Nunn.
When Wegmans opened its Long Island store last month, there was a line out the door. This store opens July 23. There will be three entrances; Connecticut Avenue, Keeler Avenue and Richards Avenue.
