As temperatures begin to drop, the City of Bridgeport is offering free smoke detectors and installation services to help residents stay safe during the fall and winter months.

Fire officials say home fires typically increase as colder weather arrives, making working smoke detectors a critical safety tool. Through the program, firefighters will visit homes and install smoke detectors at no cost.

"The installation of a free smoke detector is the best way to save lives and prevent fires," said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim. "I have been there; I have seen the tragedies, the loss of life, when a fire hits. Call the fire department. It's free. We want to save lives, prevent fires from happening and help prevent the loss of life."

The program is open to all Bridgeport residents, as well as landlords who live on their properties.
