A tractor‑trailer slammed into a commercial building off Route 3 in Clifton early this morning, leaving the driver injured and forcing extended closures as crews work to stabilize the structure and remove the truck.
The crash happened at 2:22 a.m. on the eastbound exit ramp from Route 3 to Passaic Avenue, where officers and the Clifton Fire Department responded to reports of a truck into a building that houses Toptown Limo Ride.
Fire officials said the driver of the truck, which has a USA Truck logo, was trapped inside the cab after the impact and had to be extricated by firefighters.
The driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not expected to be life‑threatening.
Authorities said the building sustained severe damage. Officials said the truck struck gas and electric service lines, prompting a rapid response from PSE&G to shut off utilities.
The Clifton Building Department responded to assess the structure and assist with planning for the truck’s removal.
Officials said the removal process is expected to last through most of the day due to the need for extensive stabilization of the damaged building.
Traffic is now flowing in both directions on Route 3.
However, ramps to and from Passaic Avenue are expected to remain closed for much of the day.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
