A driver attempting to flee U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents crashed into a parked SUV and snapped a utility pole in Teaneck on Sunday, police said.

The crash happened just before 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Queen Anne Road and Walraven Drive. Teaneck police said officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle had struck a utility pole. One of the callers identified themselves as an ICE officer.

According to police, the driver of a 2017 Toyota Tacoma was traveling west on Walraven Drive while attempting to flee pursuing ICE agents when the pickup struck a parked 2026 Nissan Rogue. The impact pushed the SUV into a utility pole, snapping it and causing wires to fall onto the roadway and additional parked vehicles.

The Toyota driver complained of head pain but declined further medical treatment after being evaluated at the scene. Police said no other injuries were reported.

Police said one of the vehicles struck by the downed wires was occupied, forcing the occupant to remain inside for about an hour until PSE&G crews arrived and made the scene safe. Representatives from Verizon also responded.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson identified the driver as Luis Angel Clfuentes Rodas, whom the agency described as a Guatemalan national who was in the United States illegally.

DHS said ICE arrested Clfuentes Rodas following the crash and alleged he "dangerously evade[d] arrest" before striking the parked vehicle and bringing down power lines.

The agency said Clfuentes Rodas entered the United States "at an unknown time and place" and that his immigration case will be heard by a Justice Department immigration judge.

"Resisting officers and evading arrest is dangerous for our officers, illegal aliens, and the public," the DHS spokesperson said.
