A Jeep burst into flames on the Thruway in Cornwall Wednesday night, forcing the closure of southbound lanes as crews battled the fire.

Fire officials say the driver noticed smoke coming from the engine shortly before 8:30 p.m. and pulled over to the shoulder. After getting out of the vehicle, the Jeep became engulfed in flames.

Citizen App video captured massive flames shooting from the vehicle as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

The southbound side of the Thruway was closed for about 45 minutes while crews extinguished the fire and cleared the scene.
