For years, there has been black algae coming down the side of the Macy’s in Stamford. Now, one man's social media posts will give the building a whole new look.
"It’s hard to get people to respect the building when its dirty," said Mike Squires, of Stamford.
Squires walks by the downtown Macy's building every day. The music producer, who wears his patriotic suit because he's making an album with an artist from every state, posted a video on Instagram and TikTok to get the building cleaned. It's going to happen this week.
"Sometimes online feels different than the real world…To have those two kind of merge into one and get recognized...it's cool. It's a little overwhelming but it’s cool," said Squires.
Making this happen wasn't a squeaky-clean process. The building is owned by Macy’s, but the major retailer is not footing the bill for the thousands of dollars it will cost to clean. The Stamford Town Center and the Stamford Downtown Special Services District are splitting the cost, News 12 was told.
"This is a great example of citizen engagement that will have a tremendously positive impact on Stamford Downtown," said Leah Kagan, Stamford’s director of economic development.
"I've even gotten messages of other people telling me that they want to do something in their community, even outside of Stamford. To see it have like a domino effect of positivity has been really empowering for myself," said Squires.
B3 Power Washing in Norwalk will do the work starting Tuesday.
A Macy's spokesperson sent News 12 a statement:
“At Macy's, we're always committed to creating a welcoming environment for our customers and colleagues. Macy’s Stamford has been working with mall management to explore options for power washing the exterior of our store, and we’re excited that the cleaning will begin this week. We appreciate community members who share our pride for keeping the community well maintained.”
