A 71-year-old Franklin Square homeowner says a roofing company tried to take $129,000 from her for repairing her roof that she says did not need fixing.
The homeowner asked not to be named or shown on camera – but says she feels violated. She says three men knocked on her door in March, claiming they saw that there were loose tiles on the roof. She says the men put up a ladder and came down holding several tiles saying they could repair her roof for $2,500.
They told her animals chewed through the support beams of the roof, and the price went up to $37,000. From there, she was told all the beams needed to be replaced and that it would cost $129,000.
She says contractors left pieces of the old roof in her backyard, and that there is nothing wrong with them.
She says the workers did replace her roof, and says she paid them a first installment check worth $20,000. She called police after becoming suspicious and not confident that the job was done correctly.
The Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly says Clifford Whitaker, president of New Dawn Construction, was arrested and charged with insurance fraud, attempted grand larceny, scheme to defraud and forgery. He pleaded not guilty and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors say they’re still looking for a second person potentially involved.
The homeowners say they’re having their new roof inspected to make sure it’s safe.
Donnelly asks anyone who may have been scammed in a similar way to call the DA’s office or police.
