A group of tenants in Crown Heights say their landlord is forcing them out.

Four tenants at 285 Eastern Parkway were served eviction paperwork back in July. The landlord stated this was due to plans to demolish the building.

"I don't know what his reason is," says Pamela Hicken, a tenant for nearly five decades. "Maybe he wants to make more money. But to uproot us like this, to just give us a couple of dollars and say 'find a place', because he wants to redo the building is not right."

She told News 12 she has dealt with a number of issues over the years, like a broken pipe in her sink, and a corrupt ceiling in her second bedroom. Another tenant says enough is enough.

"We are trying to fight for our rights," said Rosalee Frater, a tenant who has lived in her apartment since she was 13 years old. "Why do we have to uproot ourselves, and move our families, move our kids to somewhere we don't even know?"

Homes and Community Renewal have not yet approved the evictions of any tenants.

The tenants also mentioned their lease is up on May 31. Should HCR move forward with the eviction, the landlord does not have to renew the lease. However, if HCR does not move forward, the tenants can get their lease renewed for another two years.

News 12 reached out to the landlord for comment and had not heard back as of Tuesday night.
