A convicted felon is now charged with murder in connection with Sunday’s deadly shooting in Port Jervis — and prosecutors say the violence stemmed from a drug deal gone bad.

Police responded just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday to multiple reports of gunfire on Hammond Street in the city’s Fourth Ward. When officers arrived, they found 43-year-old Jason Finch, of Port Jervis, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds following a disturbance outside a residence. He was transported to Bon Secours Hospital, where he later died.

Authorities say the suspect, 26-year-old David Rombousek, was taken into custody later that evening following a day-long manhunt.

Surveillance video provided to News 12 shows a swarm of armed officers converging on Ball Street before taking Rombousek into custody in a rear yard. Police say he was arrested without incident.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office says investigators have obtained multiple surveillance videos from the neighborhood and describe the evidence in the case as strong.

Rombousek is charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors say the shooting was the result of a drug deal that escalated into violence.

The District Attorney’s Office tells News 12 that Rombousek has three prior felony convictions and has served prison time. According to prosecutors, those convictions include attempted assault, attempted criminal possession of a weapon and disseminating an unlawful surveillance image. Officials say he also violated probation in the past, which resulted in additional prison time.

Rombousek was arraigned and remanded without bail. He remains held at the Orange County Correctional Facility as the case moves toward grand jury review.
