1h agoIt's Halloween and all your little ghouls and goblins will be out and about later Thursday.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation wants to keep it fun and safe by offering these tips to drivers:
- Be aware of pedestrians at all times and in all locations.
- Be extra careful at night or during bad weather.
- Be ready to stop when approaching or turning into crosswalks.
- Stop at crosswalks and maintain a safe distance, allowing other drivers to see and stop for pedestrians as well.
- Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk: There may be pedestrians crossing that you cannot see.
"Put your phone down. Slow down. Make sure you're paying attention. There’s going to be a lot of families, a lot of young people out and about across CT so make sure that you're paying attention, staying alert at all times and of course driving sober," said CT DOT Communications Director Josh Morgan.
The state DOT says 53 pedestrians have been killed in our state this year — more than all of last year.
Stamford police also have some tips for Halloween safety.
- Make sure you use the buddy system. So, travel with more than one person
- Try and find a costume that glows in the dark
- Don’t use cut through streets
- Stay on the main roads
- It gets dark earlier now so most importantly
Stamford police say they will be driving around the city later Thursday and making sure they will be visible.
CT DOT says October is the most dangerous month for pedestrians.
