The fate of Paul Caneiro is now in the hands of the jurors.
Caneiro is charged with murdering his brother Keith, Keith's wife Jennifer and their two young children, Jesse and Sophia, back in November 2018.
Jurors were sent home for the day. Deliberations will begin Friday morning on the more than a dozen counts Paul Caneiro is facing. The most serious are four counts of felony murder. A guilty verdict on just one of those could be enough to send him to prison for life.
Judge Marc Lemieux charged the jury on Thursday afternoon. That is a procedural term which is a process of the judge explaining in detail each of the more than dozen counts against Paul Caneiro and how the burden of proof will factor into their decision making during deliberations. For a guilty verdict, they must be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt the allegations are true.
Closing arguments began on Wednesday when defense attorney Monika Mastellone laid out their side of the case and why they feel the State arrested the wrong man. Assistant Prosecutor Chris Decker spent hours going through the case on Thursday morning making the state’s final argument why Paul Caneiro is guilty of the crimes.
Jurors will return at 8 a.m. Friday to begin deliberations.
