Bridgeport officials are getting the word today about a massive roadwork project kicking off this weekend.

They say they began filling potholes about a month ago but delayed much of the work due to on again off again cold weather.

Officials say it's time to charge ahead and get the potholes filled, come rain or shine.

They're urging both drivers and pedestrians to use extra care as work gets underway on the East Side and the South End today.

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim weighed in on the upcoming project.

"Potholes, street sweeping, these are priorities. We have more potholes this year than I think we've ever had because of this extreme winter,” he said. "Please, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but we want our trucks out there. We want our city clean and of course we want our potholes filled."

City officials say they expect the project to continue well into summer, with workers targeting every part of the city.

They say with so many workers in the streets, it's more important than ever to keep your eyes on the road and never text while you're driving.
