        City of Mount Vernon holds second financial Town Hall to address finances

        The Town Hall meeting allowed community members to voice their concerns regarding the funds and how the city plans to address the audits, which officials say are almost six years behind.

        External auditors and officials with the City of Mount Vernon gathered Monday evening in Town Hall to discuss the city's plan moving forward following the January 2022 financial findings.
        The Town Hall meeting allowed community members to voice their concerns regarding the funds and how the city plans to address the audits, which officials say are almost six years behind.
        The January 2022 findings also saw $61 million in outstanding liabilities.
        City Comptroller Dr. Darren Morton says the most positive outcome at this point would be to catch up on the audits.
        "I think that Mount Vernon is in good position. I think we are moving forward. Of course we have some challenges, and we will continue to deal with some of those challenges," he said.
        According to officials, the plan is to complete the audits two to three years at a time as to make the process more efficient and prevent future backups.
