The MTA announced plans around 2022 to turn the former Bronx Golf Center and driving range into an electric bus charging station, but a City Council resolution hopes to make the agency address questions about how it will affect the community. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that electric vehicles are better for the air quality because they produce zero tailpipe emissions and have lower overall carbon footprints, even when considering the electricity used for charging. The MTA has set a goal of reaching a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2040, and the agency said this new facility would allow the MTA to more quickly convert other MTA bus depots. City Councilman Kevin Riley introduced Resolution 187-2024, calling for a full environmental impact statement on the project. He said that Bronx residents in his district have and are willing to do their part to help improve the environment, but that city agencies need to ensure community members are included in the process. Community Board 12’s District Manager George Torres said the MTA never approached the community board. He said the Community Board had voted for the MTA-owned lot to be made into a retail destination with a senior housing residence off on the side of the development. “Are there going to be more buses in the area? Is it going to lead to higher congestion? Charging stations have to be drilled into the floor, is that going to impact flooding?” Riley said during a visit to the site with News 12. “A lot of people also think about, hey, every time someone wants to add something to the Bronx, it's always like these big electric poles or shelter.” The MTA did not commit to doing the environmental impact statement but told News 12 in a statement that “The project is in the development stage with no further updates at this time. We will follow all applicable environmental regulations."
