Town of Poughkeepsie police say a 6-year-old was stabbed in Poughkeepsie Saturday night.
Police responded to a residence on Creek Road for a report of a child with multiple stab wounds. Officials now say officers arrived around 5:57 p.m. and found two people already providing first aid to the injured child. Officers continued lifesaving measures until EMS arrived.
Officials say a second child was at the residence and witnessed the attack and then flagged down passing motorists for help. Police say those motorists immediately called 911 and stayed with the injured child until EMS arrived.
Police have arrested 30-year-old Karen Rendon in connection to the stabbing and say that she tried to run away, but was later caught around 2:11 a.m. in the area of Parker Avenue in the City of Poughkeepsie. She was taken into custody without incident.
Police say earlier media reports that she barricaded herself inside the home were false.
Rendon has been charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
She was arraigned Sunday and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on $500,000 cash bail, $1 million insurance bond, or $1.5 million partially secured bond.
Police say the 6-year-old victim is in stable condition and expected to recover.
Town of Poughkeepsie Police also thanked the people on the scene who acted “swiftly and courageously” to help the child. The case remains under active investigation.
Authorities have not revealed the relationship between Rendon and the children.
