Cars are being stolen from outside a mechanic shop in Hunts Point.
D&M Towing on Edgewater Road says at least two vehicles were stolen last week around 10 p.m. from outside its shop.
"The pickup truck passed here around 10 p.m., and grabbed the two cars and took them," said Daniel Orozco, who works at the shop.
Orozco filed a report with the police, who tracked the vehicle down to a junkyard in Montvale, New Jersey. Orozco says the windows were smashed and the radio was stolen when it was returned to the shop days later. The second vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet sedan, has not been found.
Orozco says their company is an authorized tow company for the NYPD. These two particular vehicles were outside because they were waiting to be picked up by the NYPD to be transported to their lot. However, the uptick in car thefts has him concerned for their business and customers' vehicles.
"There are a lot of thefts in the area, they'll break the cars and take the pieces out of the cars," said Orozco.
Their shop has space for 30 to 40 cars to be parked inside at a time, but the overflow vehicles are usually parked out front under surveillance cameras.
Car thefts are up 26.2% in the Bronx, with 400 cars reported stolen this year compared to 317 at the same time last year, according to NYPD data.
