Suffolk County police a car crashed through the front of a Deer Park cigar shop Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the vehicle barreled into Stogies Cigar Lounge, a private members club off Deer Park Avenue at 4:39 p.m.
Detectives say the driver of a 2011 Honda was attempting to park when it’s believed he suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the car. The 49-year-old man from Shirley was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Police say no arrests had been made in the incident as of Sunday night.
There were no additional injuries.
The crash left crumbled bricks, the metal door frame bent, and glass scattered across the sidewalk and parking lot.
“He hit the curb which is only a six-inch reveal, hopped it, right through the storefront,” said Mike Petrullo, of Deer Park.
Petrullo said he was just minutes away from walking up to the door when the crash happened. He was meeting a friend inside but tended to sit outside on a chair that got twisted up in the rubble.
“The traffic, the walking traffic here is all day. You have pizzeria, Chinese restaurant, you have a coffee shop, you have the laundry mat right next door. There’s traffic here 24/7 of people,” Petrullo added.
Ernestine Joell, an employee at the neighboring laundromat, said she was stunned.
“I didn’t expect for it to happen here, but yeah, this is why when I sit there, I look out this window, so if anything, I can see it coming before and run,” she said.
Members say Stogies will be boarded up until repairs can be made.
