New Yorkers weren't thrilled with the idea.
A bit further south across the Hudson River, a new regional challenger has emerged to compete for the "pizza capital" title.

Both Connecticut and New Jersey have long been regarded as premier pizza states thanks to robust Italian immigration into each state at the turn of the 20th century.
Connecticut has the highest percentage of Italian Americans in the country at 16.5%, while New Jersey follows closely behind at 15.3%.
