Family members of a critically injured bystander spoke out today and demanded accountability about the police-involved shooting that developed out of officers following a fare evasion suspect in Brownsville.

The rally follows a heated protest that took place last night in Brownsville.

The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon when 49-year-old Gregory Delpeche was struck in the head by a stray bullet while police attempted to subdue a fare evader. Delpeche is still in critical condition.

The family rallied at the Brownsville Recreation Center today to call for accountability.

A protest began last night at the Sutter Avenue subway station, where demonstrators gathered to demand justice. Following the rally, they marched to the police precinct, expressing outrage over the use of such force over a subway fare.

Four people were injured Sunday during the incident: an officer, two bystanders and the suspect, Derell Mickles. Police say officers opened fire after Mickles allegedly threatened them with a knife and their Tasers failed to subdue him.

Mickles is now facing multiple charges, including attempted assault.

In total, the NYPD says 18 individuals were issued summonses for disorderly conduct during the protest last night.
