Brooklyn residents gathered Saturday to celebrate the annual Junior Carnival and Youth Festival and a special back-to-school giveaway on Eastern Parkway.
The sounds of steel pans rang out into the streets, the tantalizing scent of jerk-seasoned cuisine was in the air, and revelers on Eastern Parkway were adorned in vibrant flowers and jewels.
The event is highly anticipated among all ages in the neighborhood.
"I normally do this with my sister and I'm excited about it," said participant Mia Barchwaice. "It's my family tradition and it's my culture."
Barchwaice was one of the many children who attended the Junior Carnival with their families, all looking forward to a day filled with dancing, live music, performances, various delicacies and this year's special back-to-school giveaway.
"Its our obligation to support the community and provide school supplies for students in central Brooklyn," said Camara Jackson , CEO of Elite Leaners, INC. It's a foundation aimed at serving the Brooklyn community.
Mother's like Timmany Telesford, can attest to the foundation's impact, as she happily accepted a bright blue bag to hand to her son. "I'm happy and I'm really appreciative about this because not every family can afford a bag," says Timmany. "So I know a lot of families out here will be thankful."
Those who are looking to attend additional events to celebrate the carnival spirit can do so through Sept. 2 on the Eastern Parkway.
