The Brownville and Crown Heights communities are grieving the loss of two young people to gun violence.
The NYPD has identified the 15-year-old victim as Heath Campbell and the 21-year-old victim as Nickalos Mitchell.
Campbell was coming home from school Tuesday afternoon when police say he was shot in the head in the lobby of the Rutland Plaza Apartment Complex in Brownville where he lived.
The boy's mother, Joy Smith, spoke to News 12 about the grief she experienced.
"He was murdered, and I want justice for my child," Smith said, "he deserves it."
Smith said Campbell was a sophomore at Brooklyn Institute of Liberal Arts, and well-liked by his teachers, some of which went to the hospital after learning he'd been shot.
"They spoke of how great of a student he was, they spoke about how he was excelling, and they were proud of him and how he was in class that very morning," said Pastor Louis Straker Jr., board chairman, The GodSquad, 67th Precinct Clergy Council.
The GodSquad and Project Echo, both anti-gun violence groups, are in contact with the families of both of the victims and gathered outside the apartment building where Campbell was shot to call for more resources and community centers to be brought to Central Brooklyn to end the gun violence.
The second shooting happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at 415 Lefferts Ave.
The 21-year-old victim, Mitchell, was taken to Kings County Hospital Tuesday night where he was pronounced dead.
Police say a suspect was last seen fleeing westbound on Lefferts Avenue.
There have not been any charges filed for either incident.
Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
