A Bronx man is demanding safety upgrades on the Hutchinson River Greenway after he says a tree branch knocked him out while he was riding on it.
Michael Brown told News 12 he was riding along the greenway on a scooter last fall when he heard a snap and became unconscious.
He says he woke up to his scooter under a branch and part of the tree on the ground.
He said he had a broken rib and a concussion from the accident, and a year later, he still faces health challenges.
"Spine issues, back issues. And I have nerve damage. All from this accident," Brown said.
He showed News 12 crews where the accident occurred and pointed out areas of concern.
"If you go through this whole strip down here, you see a whole bunch of dead trees, you see a whole bunch of fallen trees, logs and everything. And it's it's dangerous. Nobody pays attention to it," Brown said.
Brown told News 12 the greenway does not have signage or proper lighting at night. He said people won't be able to see cracks in the road and low-hanging branches at night, which poses a serious safety hazard.
He said he contacted 311 and several city leaders, and has not seen any changes along the greenway. He also tried to contact multiple lawyers to pursue legal action against the city, but they all told him it would be too hard to prove that a tree actually fell on him.
He's calling for increased lighting along the greenway, proper signage and adequate tree trimming to prevent falling branches and broken trees.
The Bronx Borough President's Office sent News 12 the following statement:
“After speaking with Mr. Brown, our office contacted the NYC Department of Transportation and is currently awaiting a response. We take all safety concerns very seriously and will continue to follow up with DOT to ensure that any issues along the Hutchinson River Greenway are promptly addressed.”
A spokesperson added they will share any updates with News 12. News 12 also reached out to the Parks Department and Council Member Kevin Riley's office. We are waiting for a response.
