Neighbors in Brighton Beach tell News 12 they have been begging the city for help cleaning up a house on Six Street. Massive piles of garbage fill the front yard of the abandoned home, causing garbage and flies to infest the area.
“It's the rat house," Thomas, a neighbor said. "The only house that messes up this whole block.”
Neighbors say they have filed complaints with 311, the Department of Sanitation and the Department of Health since last spring but nothing has been done.
“I tried to encourage him to call 311, to not give up, to do something," resident Elana Masterovoy said. "And he kind of went 'Oh, we already called and nothing changed.'”
The Department of Sanitation responded to News12's request for information and said they have issued 71 summonses to the residence in the calendar year alone, but also explained the law does not allow them to enter and clean private property.
“All they will do is issue a summons and they will let the house be dilapidated,” neighbor Michael Rosati said.
The smell isn’t the only concern they have about the trash. One neighbor told News 12 they were bit on the leg by a rat at the property.
News 12 reached out to the city's Department of Health and the Department of Buildings for a comment and is waiting to hear back.
