The Bridgeport community is assisting families displaced by a deadly fire that happened on Monday.
City Council members gathered on Wednesday at Tae's Lounge on the East End to present families with gifts and other assistance.
The fire on Connecticut Avenue on Monday left one woman dead and eight residents displaced.
"I personally went to Walmart and purchased quite a bit of things for the families that are currently here, and I will continue to do so until they're in their own homes," said Councilwoman Eneida Martinez.
"When anyone hurts in the East End, we all hurt and we wanted the families to know that there are people that care about you; we want to do everything we can to help put your lives back together," said Councilman Ernie Newton.
Organizers thanked residents who stepped in to help.
