Drivers in Rockland County will have a little more time before a major road closure along Route 59. State transportation officials say the shutdown of the bridge over Pascack Road will now begin June 3. The project had originally been scheduled to start earlier this week. Once it begins, the closure will last through the summer, with work expected to wrap up just before Labor Day. Crews will replace key parts of the bridge, including steel girders and the concrete deck. Officials say the upgrades will also allow the bridge to safely handle all legal loads, including tractor-trailers. The closure has left some drivers concerned about getting around. "The whole thing is going to be closed for the summer? That's a hassle," said Ashanti of Spring Valley. For many residents, Route 59 is a key route connecting to other parts of Rockland County. "People take that to go to Nanuet… usually that's the main way to go," Ashanti added. During construction, detours will be posted and businesses along the route will remain open. Officials also say taxi service will be available to help shuttle pedestrians around the work zone.
