A BMW was stolen from the driveway of a Summit home early Sunday after a suspect first entered the unlocked car, walked away and returned moments later, police said.

The theft happened shortly after 12:40 a.m. at a home on Hillcrest Avenue, according to Summit police.

Surveillance video showed a white SUV slowly pass the home before backing toward the driveway. Police said a man got out of the SUV and entered an unlocked gray 2024 BMW M2 parked at the home.

The man spent about 10 seconds inside the BMW before returning to the SUV, which drove away and then returned moments later, according to police.

Police said the man entered the BMW again, appeared to manipulate its dashboard display and then started the car. The BMW and the white SUV then left Summit.

Police described the SUV as possibly a BMW with Maryland license plate 5GP8628. The SUV had not been reported stolen when police reviewed the incident.

The suspect was dressed mostly in black and wore neon Nike Air Max 95 sneakers, police said.
