The race for Nassau County’s 16th Legislative District is turning into one of the most contentious local contests this election season — and the outcome could affect the county’s political landscape.
Incumbent Democrat Arnie Drucker is facing off against Republican challenger Jennifer Gallub Pravato in a heated campaign marked by sharp attacks and accusations of misconduct from both sides. The district includes communities like Syosset, Plainview and parts of Farmingdale.
The campaign has taken a combative turn. Drucker has questioned whether Gallub Pravato actually resides within the district — a legal requirement for all candidates. He pointed out that she is registered to vote at an apartment above a barber shop in Farmingdale, while her husband, Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato, remains registered at their family home in Massapequa Park — outside the district.
“That apartment is my primary residence. I do live there,” Gallub Pravato insisted, responding to the challenge.
Online real estate listings show the Massapequa Park home is not currently up for sale. “We still own the home. We never sold it,” she acknowledged. “We are going to sell that house.”
Meanwhile, Gallub Pravato has launched her own attacks, accusing Drucker of benefiting personally from legislation related to tax breaks in the Country Pointe development in Plainview — where he now lives.
“He decided to move here with the bill that he worked on,” she said. “It was for himself, and he was self-serving.” Drucker strongly denied the accusation.
“Any legislation that gets passed in Nassau County has to be voted on by the 12 majority members,” he said. “I am a minority member. So I couldn’t carve anything out myself.”
With Republicans currently holding a 12–7 majority in the Nassau County Legislature, this race is being watched closely.
A win for Gallub Pravato would give the GOP a 13-member supermajority.
