A Bay Shore man is facing a drunken driving charge after police say he drove his car off a pier and into the Great South Bay in Sayville early Sunday morning.
Suffolk County Police say they responded to Sayville Marina Park, located at 400 Foster Ave., around 6 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a vehicle in the water.
Police said Nicholas Volpicelli, 26, of Bay Shore, was driving a Toyota Camry when the vehicle went off the pier and into the bay.
The car came to rest about 50 feet from the shore and was partially submerged, police said.
"I'm here 35 years. I've seen boats hit jetties, I've seen a plane land in the water. But this one is for the record. It was strange to see a car floating in the water," said Deni Reines of Sayville.
Authorities say Volpicelli exited the vehicle and made it back to shore on his own.
