Authorities are searching for an Orange County mother and her two young children who have been missing for weeks during a custody dispute.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says 30-year-old Yahaira De La Mora Gomez, of New Hampton, New York, missed a family court hearing in the county in December and that she and the children haven’t been seen since late-November.
Authorities say Gomez lost custody of her 3-year-old daughter, Alexandra, during the hearing and full custody was temporarily awarded to the child’s father, Michael LaMarca, who is now searching for the girl and is worried for her safety.
“I just want my kid back. I just want her safe. I want her in a less stressed environment,” says LaMarca.
Authorities say Gomez was last seen leaving her apartment on Lynch Avenue on or about Nov. 22 with the toddler and Gomez’s 8-year-old son from a previous relationship, Alexander, in tow. Alexander went to school in the Minisink Valley School District, according to deputies, who say the child hasn’t been in class since mid-November.
Gomez’s landlord gave News 12 surveillance video of the family on the last day they were seen, showing them with packed bags and getting into a white Nissan Pathfinder. In one of the videos, the boy appears to be crying, and the toddler can be heard asking if they’re going on a trip.
The woman’s landlord, who asked not to be identified, says she’s disturbed by how the family left and showed News 12 writings about Satan with a pentagram that she alleges were later found inside Gomez’s apartment closet.
Officials say the children are not believed to be in danger but that Gomez, who has ties to Florida, California, Equador and Mexico, may be trying to leave the state with them. So far, there’s no evidence the family crossed the border or got on a flight, according to authorities.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says the Nissan Pathfinder the family was seen leaving their apartment in did not belong to Gomez and that it has been located with the registered owner in New York. Orange County Child Protective Services and Homeland Security are aiding in the investigation.
An attorney for Gomez had no comment.
News 12 has not been able to contact the father of Gomez’s son.
Officials say they have a warrant out for Gomez. LaMarca, meantime, hopes his daughter can be returned home soon.
“I just want to give her the biggest hug. I miss her so much. I can’t describe what this is like.”
