Attorney General William Tong and Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli announced an investigation into former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart.
The investigation concerns Stewart’s handling of charitable assets associated with the Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund, a donor-advised fund managed by the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain.
The state said it has identified two relevant accounts: the fund managed by the foundation and a separate checking account.
The checking account, also named the Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund, is held at M&T Bank and is not managed by the foundation.
Stewart and M&T Bank were served with subpoenas Wednesday, while the foundation received a letter of inquiry.
“It is our job to ensure charitable organizations adhere to all rules and regulations, and it is our priority to give donors confidence that when they give to charity, their contributions are used as intended,” said Attorney General William Tong and DCP Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli. “This inquiry will follow the facts wherever they lead, without regard to politics or personalities.”
