Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas has laid off hundreds of employees nationwide, including 40 in Downtown Brooklyn and 30 in Manhattan. Now, former and current workers, and union representatives say the cuts will hurt both staff and customers.
The union, which has been negotiating its first contract for a year, accuses the company of unfair labor practices. While they are not striking, they say it’s not off the table.
A source close to the company says the layoffs were due to a seasonal slowdown and that former employees can reapply when business picks up.
But the union argues Alamo should have reduced hours instead of cutting jobs, as it has done in the past.
Negotiations between the union and Alamo Drafthouse continue next week.
