Achilles International hosted its second Disability Pride Month picnic at Lake Welch today. Over 150 athletes, veterans and volunteers were in attendance for the gathering.

Buses from New York City brought members of the organization up to Rockland to spend a day outside in the sun. Attendees shared food, music and laughter to honor 36 years of the ADA.

New York State Parks ADA Coordinator Owen Gilbo said, “It’s very important to realize that outdoor recreation, like every other facet of life, is a right for people with disabilities.”

With the aid of the Palisades Park Conservancy, accessible features like water-safe wheelchairs and a mobile ramp were set up to encourage participants to enjoy the lake. There will soon be more permanent features for those with disabilities to use.

This event is part of recent initiatives from the Palisades Park's Conservancy to introduce more accessible features across their parks. More programs with Achilles International will take place here over the summer.
