Nassau County police say a 4-year-old boy was found outside alone in freezing temperatures on Christmas night.
The child was discovered late that evening in the area of Twin Lane South in Wantagh and was not reunited with family members until the following morning.
The child was identified and safely returned to a family member Thursday morning.
Neighbors expressed relief that the boy was unharmed.
"I think it’s sad that happened. I’m glad he’s safe. It’s a Christmas miracle," said Eda Fey, who lives nearby.
News 12 spoke with someone at the home where the boy had gotten out. They confirmed the child was back with family but declined to comment further.
The case has now been referred to Child Protective Services for further investigation.
