Now in a matter of hours, the Allerton community showed up to help those impacted by this fire. News tells Valerie Ryan joining us tonight from PS 76, where the local school turned into a center for relief efforts. Valerie, how are people pitching in? Well, Amanda, today we've witnessed the strength of this community as one by one neighbors are stepping in to help each other. Now some are donating clothes, others are donating their time, and although that although this community is united and grateful to be alive, there is no doubt they are shaken by this experience. We got everything brand new and now it's all gone. We can't get anything back a sense of loss and despair. My seven year old is devastated. I'm sorry. All he said was like, I just got my Pokemons for Christmas and we just moved here as families grapple with their new realities, community members, local agencies, and the American Red Cross have stepped in. The school has brought food for people. They've brought resources for people. We have volunteers from the Red Cross here helping support people. It's just really amazing to watch people volunteer their time and their resources to help support neighbors in need. At least 90. 3 households and more than 250 people are registered for emergency help from the Red Cross, including temporary housing, where they will be housed over the next week or 2. 12 cameras captured tenants board MTA buses headed to that temporary housing while volunteers and organizations led recovery efforts. But the question is what do we do now? We just stay somewhere else. We just get whatever we get, we don't. As you can see there, it's been a very emotional day, and now local officials say they are working with city agencies to figure out what these next steps for residents will be, and they hope to have an answer for them within the coming days. And we continue our team coverage tonight on that Allerton building fire right now from the alert center where News Twelve's Eli Murillo has more on the numerous complaints filed by Wallace Avenue tenants and what management has to say about it, Ellie. Yeah, well, Amanda, the owner of that building is listed on HPD's website as Ved Park Ash. 411 complaints have been filed in the last 2 years. 16 of those complaints reported this week for no heat or hot water, and 9 of them, get this, posted just yesterday ahead of that fire. A long history of violations with the Department of Buildings and Housing connected to Park Ash date back to 2013. News 12 has also reported the same landlord as the owner of two other Bronx properties hit with multiple violations by HPD that were also heavily damaged by fire. Wallace Avenue residents say they aren't surprised. The landlord is no use, no help, cash. We make 311 calls all the time about this matter and nothing ever happens. In June of 2023, tenants over in Queens reached out to News 12 over neglect of repairs from management and even threatened to file a lawsuit against Park Ash. We reached out to Park Ash management. We're just asking to see what efforts are being done. There's a Fire in one of your buildings. Multiple complaints. That employee told me to send them an email. A spokesperson for Park Ash Management replied with this prepared statement after our call. It says in part, We are withholding comment because this is an active fire investigation. There's complaints, city complaints. Look it up. HPD has also reported 74 violations at this location. Again, it is still unclear what started this fire. Welcome to News to the Bronx, and thank you for joining us. I'm Christy Reader, and we start with that breaking news we've been following out of Allerton. Now we continue to follow the devastating 5 alarm fire there that tore through the top level of an apartment building, the top floor there building, and it sent smoke billowing throughout that neighborhood. Newswell's Lindsay Tanny, she's at the scene. She's been there all morning. Hi Yes, Christie, definitely a really long morning for these first responders. Over 250 firefighters have been working here for hours just trying to put out these flames, and as you can see behind me, they're still trying to put out those flames. Definitely a really scary morning for the community and all that are involved. I heard bang bang and everything crashing. And then I called 911. I'm trying to my neighbors knocking on the door. They're like, Oh, it's a fire evacuate. Hundreds of people had to run out of their homes in the freezing cold as more than 200 firefighters battled the blaze. Initially we had fire companies inside conducting searches, removing people, and attempting to fight the fire. The fire had too much headway. It was extremely dangerous for our firefighters. The cold temps and the wind blew smoke everywhere. Luckily no one was severely hurt. That's a miracle. This was a very, very large fire, wind driven. Fire officials say it broke out on the top floor. All those apartments destroyed. Some people tell us the building had no heat, heat the top. Do you think a space heater caused this to be. After me, no doubt about that. And we still don't know the cause of the fire, but what we do know is that 7 people were injured, 5 of them are firefighters, and now residents are with the Red Cross over at PS 76.
