21-year-old charged in Clifton synagogue burglary
A 21-year-old Bergenfield man has been charged in the burglary of a Clifton synagogue after police say he used a hammer to force his way inside and steal cash.
Eliyahu Davidovici was arrested in connection with the Sept. 24 burglary. According to police, officers responded to Kehillas Beis Sholom Synagogue on Passaic Avenue in Clifton after a resident reported hearing loud noises coming from the building and seeing a man running from the area.
When police arrived, they found signs of forced entry but no suspect. Officers conducted an investigation using drones and a K-9 unit from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office. A representative from the synagogue later responded and informed investigators that a small amount of cash had been stolen from the building.
The results of the investigation led police to Davidovici.
“Evidence shows he forced entry into the synagogue by striking a rear door with a hammer, pulling it open, and stealing cash from inside,” police said in a statement.
Davidovici was arrested on Oct. 1 and charged with burglary, criminal mischief, theft, possession of burglary tools and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was transported to Bergen County Jail.
“The Clifton Police Department will continue to use every available resource, technology, and partnership to keep our city safe,” Clifton police said following the arrest. “Whether it is a residence, business, or house of worship, we are fully committed to holding violators accountable and maintaining the rule of law.”
