A Somerset man was charged with murder after a woman was found fatally stabbed inside a Franklin Township home following a SWAT standoff, authorities said.
Craig Montgomery, 60, is facing murder and weapon charges after Franklin Township police responded to a 911 call requesting a welfare check at a Majesty Lane home Tuesday.
When officers arrived at about 10:11 p.m., they attempted to contact the residents. After receiving a call regarding additional “concerning” information about the situation, police attempted to enter the home. Montgomery then told police he had a knife and barricaded himself inside, Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald said in a statement.
At about 1:50 a.m., members of the Somerset County SWAT Team and a crisis negotiations team responded to the location. SWAT officers breached the home and entered through a sliding door. Once inside, Montgomery charged the officers with a knife. Police subdued him and took him into custody. Montgomery was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment of minor injuries.
Inside the home, officers found an unresponsive woman with apparent stab wounds to her chest. She was later pronounced dead, the prosecutor said. Her identity, cause of death and manner of death have not been released. Positive identification by the Medical Examiner’s Office is pending.
Another person in the home was not harmed in the incident, the prosecutor said.
Montgomery was charged with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Once released from the hospital, he will be transported to Somerset County Jail.
