Two Coney Island men were indicted for allegedly carrying out a mass shooting in their own backyard, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says.

Robert Smith and Kevin Blunt are accused of opening fire at a Fourth of July family barbecue, wounding eight people, including four children - and killing the youngest victim's 10-week-old puppy. Prosecutors say around 50 people were at the celebration.

The tragedy unfolded inside a residential courtyard near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street around 10:30 p.m.

The indictment identifies Smith as the alleged gunman. The DA's office says Smith attempted to shoot into the courtyard when his gun jammed. Blunt then allegedly helped Smith clear the jammed firearm, allowing Smith to fire approximately 15 rounds through the fence.

Officials say a 6-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. His puppy, Sky, was shot in the head and killed. The three other children, ages 7, 12 and 14, suffered gunshot wounds to their lower extremities.

All of the victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. Seven of them are expected to recover, while 21-year-old Dasha remained in critical condition last month. Prosecutors did not note her current condition on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Smith and Blunt, both 44 years old, face an 88-count indictment that includes charges of attempted murder, assault, criminal use of a firearm and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to court documents, Smith was captured by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force four days after the shooting. Officers walked him out of the 60th Precinct in handcuffs later that day.

U.S. Marshals took Blunt into custody at a later date in the confines of the 84th Precinct.

"The fact that no person was killed is extraordinary, but it does not diminish the alleged recklessness and brutality of this attack. We will now seek to hold both defendants fully accountable for the devastation they are accused of causing," said DA Gonzalez.

Prosecutors say both men faced a judge for the first time Wednesday and are being held without bail.

Smith is due back in court on Oct. 14 while Blunt is expected to return on Aug. 19.
