An 18-year-old man was stabbed twice in the chest after stepping in during an attack following a pickup basketball game at a Bergenfield park, police said.
Officers were called to Veterans Memorial Park on New Bridge Road around 8:45 p.m. Friday and found the New Milford man with two stab wounds. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in stable condition.
Police said two Bergenfield teenagers had planned to attack a 17-year-old boy from Dumont after the game. The 18-year-old was stabbed after intervening when the two teens began assaulting the 17-year-old, according to police.
The two teens then fled in a gray Nissan Altima but were found by officers and detectives shortly after the stabbing.
A 16-year-old boy was charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses, as well as tampering with physical evidence. A 17-year-old boy was charged with simple assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.
Both were being held at the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center pending further court proceedings.
