An 18-year-old Coram man has been indicted on attempted murder and other felony charges after prosecutors say he shot a man outside an apartment building during a dispute over a $25 marijuana debt.
Dominick Tullon was arraigned April 2 on an indictment, charging him with attempted murder in the second degree and four additional felonies in connection with the March 22 shooting, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said Thursday.
According to prosecutors, Tullon went to the victim's apartment with two other people to collect a $25 debt allegedly owed by the victim's 16-year-old stepson for marijuana. Investigators say an argument ensued between Tullon's group and the victim, his wife and the teen.
After several minutes, the victim directed his family to go back inside the apartment, authorities said. At that point, Tullon allegedly pulled a handgun from a fanny pack and opened fire.
Prosecutors say two bullets struck the apartment's door frame, one entered a neighboring unit, and one hit the victim.
"The defendant allegedly fired four shots at this man and his family outside an occupied apartment building, all over a $25 debt," Tierney said in a statement. "The victim is now living with permanent consequences of a bullet lodged near his spine."
Tullon and the others fled the scene, authorities said. About 19 minutes later, Tullon allegedly returned with his hands raised and was taken into custody.
The victim was taken to a hospital and underwent two surgeries. Doctors determined the bullet could not be removed because doing so would risk paralysis, prosecutors said.
Tullon is being held without bail pending the case. He is scheduled to return to court May 19.
If convicted on the top count, Tullon faces up to 25 years in prison.
