An 18-year-old was assaulted by multiple people near the Copiague Middle School on Thursday afternoon, according to Suffolk County police.

Police say at least one person used a baseball bat during the attack.

The 18-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

No arrests have currently been made.

Dr. Kathleen Bannon, the superintendent of Copiague Schools released the following statement:

"We are aware of an incident this afternoon involving one our students that occurred after secondary summer school dismissal. The incident took place off school property and after the school day had concluded. The student returned to the school, where staff immediately provided assistance and the Suffolk County Police Department and emergency medical personnel responded. The matter is now being handled by law enforcement."
