More than two dozen illegal guns have been taken off the streets in Jersey City this year, where police say their recent crackdown has also led to 17 arrests.
According to city officials, one of the weapons recovered was a "ghost gun" that police have connected to three separate cases involving the same suspect. Ghost guns are assembled without serial numbers to make it harder for investigators to trace.
“Our officers are removing these firearms from our neighborhoods without using their service weapons, placing themselves in harm’s way to prevent further violence. That is disciplined policing focused on protection, not escalation,” Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. “We are sending a clear message that carrying an unlawful handgun in Jersey City will result in arrest.”
In a statement, Mayor James Solomon said the effort to get guns off the streets is "about prevention, not reaction."
Since the start of 2026, a total of 32 firearms have been removed from circulation, Jersey City officials said.
Police are reminding residents to report suspicious activity.
“Community cooperation remains a critical component in preventing gun violence and ensuring safe neighborhoods across the city,” officials said in a statement.
