Video obtained by News 12 Connecticut shows two teenagers being sent flying through the air after the moped they were on collided with an SUV on Water Street in Norwalk Sunday afternoon.

Norwalk police say the SUV was trying to turn left onto Hanford Place around 3 p.m.

Both 16-year-olds were sent to the hospital. One of the teens sustained life-threatening injuries.

Norwalk Police Chief James Walsh says neither of the 16-year-olds was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

"We're looking at several contributing factors that might've led to this accident," Walsh says. "If your child is driving a scooter, I think it's worth a discussion that they heed all laws and wear a helmet."

Robbie Hughes lives near the intersection. He says he witnessed the aftermath of the collision.

"Police and ambulances were everywhere. It was crazy," Hughes says. "You definitely see kids every now and then going a little bit crazy, not wearing helmets, running through red lights, but the majority of them are following the laws. It could potentially be a learning experience for some of these kids. Wear a helmet, be safe, and follow the rules of the road. Hopefully everyone is going to be alright."
