The son of Amy Fisher, the Long Island woman known for the 1992 shooting of Mary Jo Buttafuoco, has been accused of animal cruelty in Florida.
Authorities allege that 25-year-old Brett Anthony Bellera and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Jennifer Armenti, microwaved their pet cat to death.
Both were charged with aggravated animal cruelty in connection with the death of a cat named Reaper, according to a Broward County arrest report.
The investigation began after Armenti allegedly told a friend on Dec. 15, 2024, that Reaper died. The person then contacted Broward County Animal Care to make a complaint the cat may have died from "unnatural causes," court documents state.
When authorities responded, they found Reaper's body in a laundry basket on a back patio with a significant amount of blood pooled at the bottom.
Court documents say the cat's body was stiff, and in an unnatural position not associated with a natural death.
Bellera told the officers that he and Armenti went to bed on Dec. 14 and woke up to find Reaper dead, suggesting the cat may have eaten cleaning products and been poisoned.
Armenti similarly told investigators she found the cat dead on the bathroom floor the following morning and said no one else had been inside the apartment.
A necropsy report revealed that Reaper died after suffering what a veterinarian described as an "involuntary heat exposure event," potentially caused by microwave radiation. The report also found the injury that was not immediately fatal and that it endured "excessive and repeated infliction of severe pain and suffering" before death.
Based on the forensic findings, police said Bellera and Armenti, who had custody and control of the animal, were responsible for the abuse that led to Reaper's death.
Bellera's mother gained national notoriety in 1992 after, at age 17, she shot Mary Jo Buttafuoco, the wife of her then-lover, auto mechanic Joey Buttafuoco, outside the family's Massapequa home.
Mary Jo Buttafuoco survived the shot to the head and Fisher served seven years in prison.
Joey Buttafuoco pleaded guilty to statutory rape and served four months in jail.
