13-year-old arrested in fatal shooting of 11-year-old in Newburgh home

Sources tell News 12 the shooting happened as children were playing with a firearm.

A 13-year-old has been arrested in the tragic fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy in a Newburgh home, police say.
City of Newburgh police responded to reports of a shooting inside a residence at 184 North Miller St. on Thursday at around 8:17 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the child dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene and quickly identified three juveniles of interest. All were located within hours.
Police arrested a 13-year-old boy, who is not related to the victim, on charges of murder in the second degree.

Sources tell News 12 the shooting happened as children were playing with a firearm. It’s still unclear how the children got the gun or who fired it. They say the boy's mother called 911 screaming and that the call was so horrific that dispatchers are receiving emotional support.

Neighbors say the area is usually filled with the sound of children, and that this loss has left them devastated.
“I would just see the kids playing around with other kids and their mom. It’s just sad,” said neighbor Edgar Vasquez.
The names of the victim and the suspect have not been release.
