Police say the attack happened Tuesday night in Valley Stream after the mother and son got into an argument.
Police say the boy stabbed his mother twice with a kitchen knife.
The 48-year-old also suffered a partially collapsed lung.
The woman is in the hospital in stable condition.
The 12-year-old has been charged with assault.
